A floor is not just a flat surface, it is an engineering decision

The right floor for a family garage is different to the right floor for a workshop running machinery, or a shed storing a boat and trailer on it every winter. Thickness, reinforcing and moisture protection all change depending on the actual load and use, not just the square metreage.

A concrete floor is not the same job as a driveway or a house foundation, even though the underlying skills overlap. This page covers the internal floor slab itself, the surface you park, walk and work on. For a full structural slab as part of a new build, see our concrete slabs page, and for footings specifically, our foundations page.

We ask what the space is actually for before specifying anything, rather than treating every garage and shed the same.

What goes into a good floor

01Compacted hardfill base, the foundation for a level, stable floor.
02Moisture barrier, where ground damp could reach the surface.
03Reinforcing mesh sized to the actual load expected.
04Poured true and level, checked across the whole floor.
05Sealed or coated to suit how the space will be used.
Finish options

Matched to how the floor gets used

Sealed plain

A simple sealed finish, the standard choice for a straightforward garage or shed floor.

Epoxy coated

A durable, chemical and stain resistant coating, popular for workshops and garages.

Broom or non-slip

Added grip texture where the floor may get wet, near a wash bay or external door.

Ready for polishing

Poured and finished to be ground and polished later for a decorative look.

Flooring pricing

What a concrete floor costs in Tauranga

Supplied and laid, GST included, for a standard residential garage, workshop or shed floor with reasonable access.

Standard garage floor

100mm, mesh reinforced, sealed

$150–$190/m²

Heavy duty workshop floor

125mm or 150mm, heavier reinforcing

$185–$220/m²

Moisture barrier

Damp proof membrane under the slab

add $8–$15/m²

Epoxy coating

Applied once the slab has cured

$35–$65/m²

What moves the price

A garage floor and a workshop floor can price quite differently.

›Load. Heavier vehicles or machinery need more thickness and steel.
›Moisture barrier. Worth it on sandier or damp-prone ground.
›Coating. Epoxy and specialty coatings add a separate cost.
›Access. Existing structures often restrict concrete delivery access.

Built for real use

Boats, workshops and everyday life in the Bay

A lot of Tauranga garages do double duty, storing a boat over summer, housing a workshop bench, or taking the weight of a caravan parked up between trips. We size the reinforcing and thickness to that actual use rather than a one size fits all garage floor.

Oil, fuel and general workshop mess are also worth planning for up front. A sealed or epoxy coated floor cleans up in minutes rather than staining permanently into raw concrete.

Flooring questions

What people ask before pouring a floor

If yours is not here, send it through with your quote request and we will answer it straight.

Ask us in the quote form
+How is this different from a foundation slab?

A foundation carries a building's loads into the ground. This covers the floor itself, what you actually park, walk or work on, including toppings, moisture barriers and finish. For a full new build slab see our slabs page, for footings see foundations.

+Do I need a moisture barrier?

Worth including on most garage and internal floors, particularly on sandier ground around Papamoa and the Mount, where moisture can migrate up through the slab and affect stored items or a later coating.

+Can you epoxy coat it?

Yes, a popular option for garage and workshop floors, giving a durable, easy to clean, oil resistant surface in a range of colours, with anti-slip additive available where needed.

+How thick should it be?

100mm is standard for a family car garage, stepping up to 125mm or 150mm with heavier reinforcing where a boat, caravan or machinery will sit or move on it, the same principle as a driveway built for what uses it.

+Can you floor an existing shed?

Yes, pouring inside an existing structure is common, working around the framing already up. Access for concrete delivery and finishing gear needs checking early since it shapes how the pour actually happens.

+What if I want to polish it later?

Tell us up front. A floor meant for later polishing gets poured and finished slightly differently for the best result once ground. We can coordinate that from day one or line up the polishing as a follow-on job.

+Does a workshop floor need anything special?

Heavier reinforcing if machinery sits on isolated feet, and a coating rated for whatever chemicals or oils are actually used. We ask what the space is for before specifying it rather than treating every shed the same.

+How soon can I use a new floor?

Foot traffic after a few days, but the full 28 days is standard for concrete to reach design strength before heavy vehicles, machinery or racking go on it. Coatings have their own separate cure time on top of that.
